Live July 6th to 10th

Think You’re “Not Musical Enough”? That’s Not True.
Let’s be honest: You’ve tried to “just listen and feel it.”

But how can you express an emotion you don’t actually hear?

You may have the costume, the technique, and the choreography — but if you’re only catching the lyrics, the rhythm, or the loudest slap of the drum, you’re missing the emotional current underneath.
And that current is Maqam.
This is where the disconnect happens.

The music is saying one thing.
Your body is saying another.

So when the melody stretches, the maqam shifts, or the taqsim begins… you freeze, guess, or wait for the beat to come back.

This challenge will shift the way you listen — and show you that musicality isn’t a gift.
It’s a skill you can develop, trust, and feel.

Here’s What You’ll Learn Over 5 Transformative Days

DAY 1
The Hidden Alphabet of Arabic Music
Learn what Maqam actually is, why it’s the emotional foundation of Arabic music, and why it’s essential for dancers. This is where the mystery starts becoming a map.
DAY 2
 Beyond “Happy” and “Sad” Maqamat
Maqam doesn’t work in one-size-fits-all emotional labels. Learn how one maqam can hold light, darkness, tension, and release — so you can hear the real emotional shape of the music and express it with more depth.
DAY 3
How to Recognize Maqam by Ear (Without Second-Guessing)
You’ll learn to recognize Maqam changes intuitively just by training your ear and understanding the magic happening in the music, without dry theory.
DAY 4
The Inner Architecture of Tarab & Emotional Peaks
Learn how musicians create those spine-tingling emotional peaks through a visual map of how melodies build tension and release — so you can start listening for, anticipating, and meeting the brief tarab moments that make Arabic music so powerful, before they pass you by.
DAY 5
Demystify Taqsim
Taqsim is not a random mystery — it has an emotional arc. Taqsim stops feeling scary when you know its shape and flow. Learn to hear the arc, feel where you are, and ride the waves with the calm, confident smile of a dancer who trusts the music.

Hello, I'm Maya Youssef

I’m a multi-award-winning master musician, the BBC’s “Queen of the Qanun,” and the creator of the Maqam Building Block Method.

I grew up in Damascus surrounded by Arabic music, trained at one of the Arab world’s leading music institutes, completed a Master’s in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, and later taught maqam there.

After decades of performing internationally, I began helping dancers understand Arabic music not through dry theory, but through emotional color, listening, and embodied musicality.

My Maqam Building Block Method replaces dry scales with emotional colors — so you can stop thinking your way through the music and start feeling where it wants to take you.

If you’ve ever felt confused during a melody or lost in a taqsim, I want you to know this:

You are not unmusical.

You’ve simply never been shown how to listen in this way.
And that’s exactly what this free experience is here to change.
